| Monday, June 4, 2007 -
Sophie Worobec, a dermatologist, returns to Chicago after spending two weeks
on a fact-finding mission in Ukraine. Through the Veselka
Foundation, Dr. Worobec became acquainted with various people involved
in Ukrainian dermatology. The trip afforded her the opportunity to
consult and share knowledge with Ukrainian physicians, deliver gifts to
aid the progress of medicine, and gain further knowledge about the
struggles of medicine in the economically developing nation. The
following are highlights from her trip report to the Veselka
Foundation....
May 21, 2007 After arriving in Kyiv, Dr. Worobec met with Dr. Ludmilla Derevyanko, the Chief of Pediatric Dermatology for Ukraine. The two discussed pediatric dermatology and the Chief's research regarding congenital syphilis. Dr. Worobec also presented the gifts of an updated pediatric dermatology textbook and a dermatoscope. May 22, 2007 Dr. Worobec meets with Volodymyr and Kateryna Kolyadenko. Both doctors discussed their dermatological interests, including non-melanoma skin cancers and the costs and benefits of patch testing. Volodymyr is the Editor of the Ukrainian Journal of Dermatology, Venerology, and Cosmetology. Also met with Dr. Derevyanko again and discussed the need for progress in opening up opportunities for exposure to international standards in the education of Ukrainian dermatologists. May 24, 2007 Dr. Derevyanko gives a tour of the National Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education's library and internet access rooms. May 25, 2007 Cryac AC is delivered to Dr. Volodymyr Dzyubak. He also spoke about his interest in "teledermatology" - using the internet, he is able to discuss cases and send pictures of skin biopsies to Dr. John Schmidt in Colorado. May 28th, 2007 After traveling from Kyiv to Uman, and from Uman to Kamyanetz Podilskiy, Dr. Worobec drives to Chernivsti. On the way, she visits the Nikolay Pirogov Museum at Vinnytsa. The museum is of "medical, historical, and humanitarian importance," according to Worobec. Dr. Pirogov was a Russian surgean who had a humanitarian approach to medicine. He started a clinic for the poor when living in Vishnya, Ukraine for 15 years. During this time, he learned how to speak Ukrainian so that he could better serve the patients. May 30th, 2007 Dr. Worobec drives back to Lviv and meets with Dr. Andriy Horodylovskiy, staff dermatologist of the L'viv Dermatologic and Venerologic Dispensary. Also discussed systemic scleroderma with Dr. Oleh Nadashkewitz, the Head of Dermatology Services for Lviv Oblast, and Rheumatology Professor at Lviv National Medical University. May 31, 2007 Dr. Worobec meets with Dr.. Andriy and his father, Dr. Nestor Horodylovski. Nestor is Chief Dermatologist of the clinic and all of L'viv Oblast. She tours the Centre, including the offices of Dr. Schmidt for Veselka Foundation. This includes the microscope and serological laboratories used for dark field examinations for spirochetes and testing for syphilis. She presented Andriy with a memory card for his digital camera and two bottles of podophyllin. She also reviewed some of the clinical photos, including severe cases of sarcoidosis and a pre-pubertal child with condyloma lata. June 1, 2007 Dr. Worobec meets with the Chief of Medical Services for Terebowla Region, and he discussed the extremely low pay of government physicians in Ukraine, which is about $100 per month!
